Netherlands opened world’s first
glow-in-the-dark lines on roads that help guide drivers in the dark.
Each edge of the N329 route in the city
of Oss has been painted with three lines of photo-luminescent paint. The paint
absorbs light during the day and then glows an eerie bright green for eight
hours during the night.
The Smart Highway project - a world
first - is the brainchild of designer Daan Roosegaarde, who has been working on
creating more 'interactive and sustainable' roads.

This is the first in a series of
interactive road markings that the designer wants to introduce, through collaboration
with construction company Heijmans.
Next month, the designer will unveil a
glowing bike path that has been inspired by Vincent Van Gogh's painting Starry
Night.
He also has plans to introduce
temperature-reactive paints that will be able to tell drivers when roads are
icy through snowflake-shaped markings that appear in freezing temperatures.
Roosegaarde also proposes street lights that turn on and off depending on the presence of traffic.
