As the Christmas-New Year travel season in full
swing, domestic airline bookings are up 73% this year as passengers take
advantage of advance purchase fares and discount offers.
According to leading online travel agencies, there
has been a 73% growth in travellers booking flights between July and November
for the December 22-January 4 holiday period, while in November alone the
year-on-year growth for flight bookings for Christmas-New Year holidays has
been almost 40%.
Indian carriers are selling tickets cheap even with
the start of the season, the only time they can increase fares, an indication
that airline companies may find it tough to make up for the throwaway fares
they have been offering all year round.
Current one-way fares on popular routes such as
Delhi-Goa and Mumbai-Goa for December 24 are also up 25-35% in comparison to
same booking dates last year.
But fares for the festive holiday season booked
during June-November were 7% in comparison to 2013. However, fares for some routes such as
Kolkata-Mumbai (13.5%), Pune-Chennai (11.5%) and Guwahati-Kolkata (11.2%)
reflected only a marginal increase from last year.
