Gujarat government has proposed the setting up of a
dedicated base for any interested private airline in a bid to increase air
connectivity and boost aviation infrastructure in the state.
In a proposal was sent to the civil aviation
ministry, Gujarat government said they are ready to offer land and subsidies in
any city of the state for a private airline to set up base.
Currently, no private airline has one city or
airport as their base in the country. Private sector airlines park their
aircraft at various airports when not in use based on feasibility in
operations.
In case of a dedicated hub, most flights of that
particular airline are routed through that airport and it acts a centre point
for connectivity to airports that the airline services. However, very few
airlines including Air India and Jet Airways, have international services while
most other airlines have domestic operations.
Gujarat has 17 airports of which nine are under the
Airports Authority of India (AAI), three with the Indian Air Force of which two
have civil terminals while two airports are private and two airports are at
Daman and Diu. The two private airports belong to the state government.
Ahmedabad airport is the only international airport.
