India’s new tourism minister Mahesh Sharma urged
schools to allow children to explore country’s beauty and culture rather than
sending them to foreign destinations on trips.
The minister has also elaborated a three-phase plan
to refurbish all monuments.
Monuments of international importance like the Taj
will be in the first phase, the second phase will include monuments that are
important in the domestic circuit and the third phase will include those
monuments that are unexplored.
The ministry plans to clean up the monuments,
provide security and guides. "We propose to secure our monuments. If state
security is not available we will use tourism police," Sharma said.
The ministry also proposed to provide "end-to-end tourism" and is finding ways to make women tourists feel secure with the help of technology including GPS taxis and qualified guides at monuments.
