India and the US has finally reached an
agreement on public stockpiling of food, paving the way for the implementation
of a global trade facilitation deal at WTO that has been stalled for months.
Indian Commerce Minister Nirmala
Sitharaman said “India and the US have resolved their differences on public
stockholding of food and with this India's proposal will now go for
ratification by WTO General Council. The US will support it”.
At the end of July, Prime Minister
Narendra Modi had pulled the plug on implementing a Trade Facilitation
Agreement struck in Bali last year.
Earlier, India has told the UN General Assembly that developing countries must have the freedom to use food reserves to feed the poor "without the threat of sanctions" and a permanent solution on food security with necessary changes in WTO rules is a must.
